True or False: Chin Surgery
One of my greatest joys as a board-certified plastic surgeon is being able to educate my patients about some of the less well known cosmetic surgery procedures that I perform. More common surgeries like the facelift, liposuction, and rhinoplasty have been household names for decades now, but less common procedures like chin surgery can often be just as helpful depending on the needs of each specific patient. With this in mind, I wanted to discuss chin surgery today and talk prospective patients through a few true and false statements about the procedure.
Chin Surgery Is Only Used to Address The Double Chin
This is false. While chin surgery can be used as a tool to help people who wish to reduce excess fat in the neck area, commonly referred to as the double chin, this is typically not part of traditional chin surgery. In fact, the majority of chin surgery procedures are actually done to help make the chin more prominent, not less.
Chin Augmentation Results Are Very Long Lasting
This is true. Once a chin implant is successfully inserted during surgery and the patient follows their doctor’s post-surgery instructions for recovery, there is an incredibly low risk of further complications or issues. A chin implant cannot leak or rupture. It’s quite common for a chin implant to maintain its form in perpetuity.
Chin Surgery Can Impact The Appearance of the Nose
This is true. It is a common wish for patients to prefer the chin and the nose to be proportional with each other, so it makes sense for a procedure that affects one of these features like chin augmentation to have an effect on the other. I always stress this fact during pre-surgery consultations among my chin surgery patients. In some cases, combining chin surgery with rhinoplasty can help provide the re-countered and symmetrical new appearance that many patients desire.
I work hard to tailor each and every chin surgery procedure that I perform to the specific needs and of every individual patient.
