What You Should Know About Recent Plastic Surgery Statistics
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) recently released its annual statistical report for last year. This in-depth statistical analysis is something I look forward to every year, as it paints a clear picture of the state of the plastic surgery industry. The report is full of interesting statistics and observations about which cosmetic procedures have risen or fallen in popularity over the last year, which is more in-demand with certain age demographics, and much more.
To confirm the accuracy of their statistics, ASAPS works with an independent research firm to compile the data used in this study. The process began by mailing a questionnaire to 7,000 board-certified plastic surgeons. Once the surveys were returned, the final figures were projected to reflect nationwide statistics. They estimate that the overall survey portion of the research has a 95% level of confidence. Below are some of the findings that I personally found most interesting and noteworthy.
- Like the previous two years, breast augmentation was the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedure, with over 280,000 surgeries performed.
- Liposuction, breast lift, tummy tuck surgery, and eyelid surgery rounded out the top-5 most common cosmetic surgeries.
- Breast implant removal saw the biggest increase in procedures performed compared to the previous year (34% increase). This combined with a 15% decrease in the number of breast augmentation procedures performed the previous year reinforces the trend I have previously discussed of women preferring smaller, more natural-looking breasts.
- The most popular cosmetic surgery procedure for male patients was liposuction, followed by male breast reduction, eyelid surgery, tummy tucks, and rhinoplasty.
- Of the procedures that I regularly perform on both male and female patients, ear surgery had the highest rate of surgeries performed on men (34%).
- Botox® Cosmetic injections were once again by far the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment, with over 1.7 million treatments performed nationwide.
I hope prospective plastic surgery patients find these statistics interesting and helpful. The world of cosmetic surgery is constantly changing. Even after decades of performing cosmetic procedures, I always find it helpful to be aware of current industry trends in order to best assist my patients.
