Debunking Common Myths About Rhinoplasty Surgery
Here in my office, it’s always heartening to speak to patients who are excited and passionate about the possibilities that undergoing a cosmetic surgery procedure like rhinoplasty can deliver. It can sometimes be difficult to know what is fact and what is fiction, so I love it when my patients are proactive and come to their consultation appointments prepared with knowledge about their respective procedures. This is why I wanted to debunk a few common myths about rhinoplasty surgery.
Myth #1: Rhinoplasty is Typically Only Performed On Women
This is false. In fact, rhinoplasty is one of the cosmetic surgery procedures that is most common for male patients. Men too can be self-conscious about the appearance of their nose, which is why so many of them turn to rhinoplasty each year. Additionally, rhinoplasty can also help men who experience breathing issues like a deviated septum or be performed as a reconstructive procedure for men who have previously broken their noses.
Myth #2: Patients Can Choose Any Nose Shape They Want
This isn’t quite true. While each rhinoplasty procedure is performed based on the unique preferences and needs of each individual patient, the goal of a rhinoplasty procedure is to provide symmetry and harmony to the patient’s existing facial anatomy. Some nose shapes and sizes may not be recommended for every patient, but we will discuss this at length during a rhinoplasty consultation appointment.
Myth #3: Rhinoplasty Can Be Dangerous to Undergo
When performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon with considerable experience performing the procedure, a rhinoplasty is considered very safe. Like any other cosmetic surgery, there are some potential risks associated with rhinoplasty, but the chances of developing any issues are quite small. Especially for patients who closely follow their plastic surgeon’s pre and post-surgery instructions and attend all follow-up appointments.
Rhinoplasty surgery can be an excellent way to help people improve their self-esteem and achieve a more symmetrical facial appearance.
