Plastic Surgery for Men: What are the Top Procedures?

Much like their female counterparts, men are interested in achieving a more vital and younger-looking appearance with the help of facial rejuvenation and body contouring procedures. Today I wanted to take a deeper look into the most recent statistics collected by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) to see which cosmetic procedures men are most commonly interested in undergoing.

Rhinoplasty

According to the numbers, rhinoplasty is hugely popular among male patients. Dating back to 2020, roughly 65,000 rhinoplasty procedures are performed on men in the US each year. Rhinoplasty is used to help guys alter the size, shape, and/or contour of the nose, to help them achieve a more balanced and symmetrical facial appearance. It is also one of the cosmetic procedures that can be performed on males under the age of 18.

Eyelid Surgery

Another very commonly performed facial surgery, eyelid surgery (also known as an eyelid lift) was #2 on the list. Eyelid surgery for men accounts for over 45,000 procedures each year in the US. The goal of male eyelid surgery is to provide subtle tweaks to the area around the eyes, and provide a more alert and refreshed appearance without sacrificing any of the patient’s more masculine facial features.

Liposuction

The most popular body contouring surgery for men, liposuction accounts for nearly 23,000 male procedures annually. Liposuction is used to help male patients remove small patches of unwanted fat that accumulate over time. The most common areas for male liposuction include the back, chest, flanks (love handles), abdomen, and neck, but the procedure can be used to remove fat from all over the face and body.

Thankfully, the days when plastic surgery was considered something that was only for women are long gone. doctor-takes-notesPlastic surgery for men is more popular than ever before, and continuing to grow year by year. However, instead of focusing on the numbers, I thought it might be instructive to discuss some of the most commonly performed procedures for male patients. While many guys may only associate plastic surgery for men with gynecomastia surgery (also known as male breast reduction), the truth is that this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how cosmetic surgery can help men of all ages refresh their look and improve their self-esteem. Today, I wanted to answer a few questions that I have received pertaining to popular cosmetic procedures for men that I perform.

Question #1: Is there a specific weight I should try to reach before undergoing a male liposuction procedure?

Like most factors of any cosmetic surgery procedure, this varies from patient to patient. There is no specific number that I advise my patients to reach in terms of their weight. I just recommend that my patient reach their personal goal weight, whatever that may be, before undergoing their liposuction surgery. And most importantly, to not gain it back. As I have stated many times, liposuction is body contouring surgery, not weight loss surgery, and significant weight loss is not a result that patients should expect from their procedure.

Question #2: How much scarring should I expect following a Z-plasty neck lift?

Minimizing visible post-surgery scarring is part of why the Z-plasty neck lift is such a popular alternative for male patients. This procedure is done to help men address the fold of skin under the chin that is often referred to as a turkey wattle. While some degree of scarring will still occur, it can be easily concealed and will fade over time with the right post-surgical care.

Question #3: How much downtime will I need after undergoing chin augmentation surgery?

In my experience, patients typically need about ten days to recover following chin augmentation before resuming their normal daily routine again. More strenuous activities, including jogging, should wait at least 2-3 weeks (and 4-6 weeks for intense exercise like heavy weight lifting). Chin surgery complications are very rare, but it’s still better to be safe than sorry in regards to recuperating and post-surgical care.

Getting to Know The Z-Plasty Neck Lift & Its Benefits

smiling-male-profile-photoAs you may be aware through personal experience, the neck is one of the areas of the body most susceptible to premature aging and other aesthetic imperfections that arise over time. This is a big reason why the neck is such a common concern for the patients that I speak to in my office. However, different procedures are capable of helping to address different aesthetic issues and it’s important for patients to understand all of their options. Today, I wanted to go into detail about one specific neck rejuvenation procedure that I perform, the Z-plasty, and the unique benefits that it can provide my patients.

I perform Z-plasty surgery for mostly men due to the way their neck area ages. I choose this as an alternative to traditional neck lift surgery. As men age, it’s natural to experience loose skin, excess fat, and weakened muscles in the neck area that can create the appearance of a double chin or “turkey neck.” Additionally, for men, it can be more challenging to hide scarring around the ear area. When performing a Z-plasty, I focus more on the jowls and how I can effectively hide any post-surgical scarring to ensure an outstanding, but subtle and discreet final result.

My Z-plasty neck lift begins by making a small incision underneath the chin, easily hidden from view. I am then able to elevate and remove excess submental fat that may cause the appearance of a double chin. Once this has been done, I will tighten the platysma muscles and remove any excess skin to create a smoother and younger-looking neck contour.

The procedure can be (and usually is) done under local anesthesia – in the office, in about one hour. Post-surgery recovery following a Z-plasty is typically very straightforward and significant results can often be seen within two months of the procedure being done.

While I primarily perform Z-plasty procedures on male plastic surgery patients, it can be performed on women in certain instances. In order to be considered a good candidate for Z-plasty surgery, patients should:

  • Be healthy enough for surgery and post-surgery recovery
  • Maintain realistic expectations for their procedure
  • Not smoke or quit smoking in the weeks preceding and following surgery
