What Are My Plastic Surgery Options Following a Lumpectomy?
Undergoing breast cancer surgery can leave women with many potential questions including whether or not they would like to pursue a breast reconstruction procedure. Although it is less invasive than a mastectomy, some women who undergo lumpectomy for breast cancer may still prefer to undergo a reconstructive surgery to help restore their breast(s). In order to help as many patients as possible, I offer different surgical options to help each patient find the right plastic surgery for their needs following a lumpectomy.
Determining the right surgical path depends on several factors including the woman’s breast size, the amount of tissue removed during the lumpectomy, and if they have experienced any indentations in their breast. Once this is determined, I will typically present the available procedure options. Breast reconstruction surgery using an implant or the patient’s own natural tissue may be of assistance and are good options for most patients. I also perform breast rearrangement surgery that works by rearranging the remaining breast tissue after a lumpectomy to restore fullness to the affected breast.
In the following video, I discuss what patients can expect from breast reconstruction following their lumpectomy:
If you’re currently considering a breast reconstruction procedure and don’t know where to begin the process, I recommend scheduling an in-person consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon like myself. During consultation appointments, I review my patient’s medical history, discuss their aesthetic preferences and goals, review before and after photos, and then present the surgery options that I believe to be most beneficial based on my many years of experience.
