How Can I Prepare For An Arm Lift Surgery Consultation?

This pre-surgery appointment allows me to get better acquainted with my patients, fully understand what they hope to achieve with plastic surgery, and guide them to the specific procedure and surgical technique to best satisfy their needs. It also gives the patient an opportunity to get their questions answered and any concerns alleviated. In the case of arm lift surgery, there are many options to consider before surgery, and putting in the time to prepare for the consultation appointment can provide the patient with a clear understanding of what to expect. That’s why I wanted to provide this helpful guide to assist patients in their preparation for an arm lift surgery consultation.

Be Specific About What You Want

“I want to revitalize the appearance of my arms.” Ok, but what specific issues do you need addressed? Are your issues caused by loose and sagging skin in the upper arm area? Or is excess fat your bigger concern? Different arm lift techniques can be employed depending on the specific needs of each patient, so it’s best to have a good idea of precisely what you’re trying to achieve.

Write Down Your Questions & Concerns

There can be a lot to keep track of during the consultation. While this is the perfect opportunity to address any specific questions, concerns, and curiosities about arm lift surgery, it’s common for certain things to slip between the cracks. That’s why keeping a running log of anything you want to ask about in the weeks leading up to your consultation can often be extremely helpful to make sure nothing gets forgotten. Scarring After Arm Lift Surgery: What to Expect

female-shows-under-arm-skinIn my personal opinion, the fear of post-surgery scarring should never be a reason for a patient to avoid plastic surgery. It’s true that scarring is an avoidable reality after any surgery. But that doesn’t mean that it will be severe or hinder the results that you are able to achieve. Today, I thought it would be helpful to go more in-depth on one specific cosmetic surgery that I perform, arm lift surgery, and explain what patients can realistically expect in terms of scarring after their procedure has been completed.

When it comes to how much scarring after plastic surgery a patient may experience, there are a few crucial factors to consider. In the case of arm lift surgery, these include how much skin, fat, and/or tissue is removed from the treated area, and also where the surgical incision will be made. Many people reach out to my office interested in an arm lift as a way to address loose skin that sags from the bottom of the upper arm area. I perform a traditional arm lift which utilizes an incision along the underside of the arm, ranging from the armpit to the elbow.

In most cases, scarring after an arm lift will only be visible when you raise your arms. This means it will not be seen when your arms are at your sides or in most other cases. However, in some cases scarring may even be more minor and easier to conceal. For patients with a smaller amount of excess skin on their upper arms, located closer towards the armpit, I may perform what is known as a limited incision arm lift. During this procedure, I make a smaller incision that is much easier to hide behind clothing. For patients who maintain strong skin elasticity in the area and opt to undergo upper arm liposuction instead of an arm lift, the scarring will be extremely minimal.

It’s important to remember that with the right surgical technique, care and post-procedure maintenance, arm lift scarring will fade significantly with time. It’s incredibly important to follow all post-surgery instructions carefully. Every person’s body will heal differently, but potential scarring after an arm lift should never be the determining factor when choosing to undergo the procedure or not. In my many years of performing the procedure, I have seen that the patient satisfaction rate following an arm lift is incredibly high.

Am I A Good Candidate For Arm Lift Surgery?

For some people, liposuction and tummy tuck surgery are synonymous with the term “body contouring”, but here at my office patients have far more options than that to improve different areas of their body. Arm lift surgery is one such procedure that is far more common and popular than most people realize. Today, I have taken some time to discuss this topic in detail and explain what makes someone a good candidate for arm lift surgery.

The first step towards knowing if an arm lift can help you is fully understanding what the procedure is intended to do. As we age, it’s very common for small pockets of fat to develop in the upper arms (back side of the bicep) and for the skin in this area to become stretched due to gravity and weight fluctuation. During an arm lift, I am able to improve the contour of the arms by safely removing the excess skin and fat that has accumulated in the upper arm area.

In order to be a good candidate for arm lift surgery, a person must experience loose skin in their upper arm area. Occasionally, they may also have pockets of unwanted fat as well which may be removed at the same time. An ideal patient is someone who is in good mental and physical health, and who is also a non-smoker, as smoking can negatively affect the procedure and recovery process. It’s quite common for people who have experienced considerable weight loss in the past to undergo arm lift surgery due to excess skin that often remains.

Some patients who wish to rejuvenate the appearance of their arms may not need an arm lift procedure. In the case that there are only deposits of fat that need to be removed and not significant skin laxity, liposuction of the upper arms should be sufficient. While scarring after an arm lift will fade with time and proper care, that is another factor to consider before making any final decision.
