breast-examCosmetic breast surgery is more in-demand than ever. But that doesn’t just mean breast enhancement with implants. Women who are interested in altering their breast contour have several outstanding options to choose from, depending on their specific aesthetic goals. And breast reduction surgery is chief among them. This procedure can provide incredible relief for women with overly large or heavy breasts who want to change the proportions of their silhouette. To help patients gain a better understanding of this procedure and what it can do, I thought it would be helpful to answer some common questions about breast reduction surgery.

Question #1: Is there such a thing as non-surgical breast reduction?

There is not. While some practices may offer skin tightening treatments to help tighten overly large breasts, the results achieved will never come close to what a breast reduction procedure can do. There is no substitute for the removal of tissue from the breast area that comes from breast reduction surgery.

Question #2: Is there a minimum breast size for undergoing breast reduction?

Not necessarily. Although many women think that breast reduction surgery can only help those with especially large or voluminous breasts, in my personal experience there is no specific minimum breast size required to undergo a reduction procedure. It simply depends on the specific body proportions and aesthetic goals of each patient. I always discuss all of this at breast reduction consultation appointments to confirm that the procedure is right for my patients.

Question #3: Is it required for a breast reduction to also resize the areola?

It does not have to. The ultimate goal of a breast reduction procedure is to help the patient attain the specific breast proportions that she desires, and that includes areola size. While the areola is often also reduced during surgery for the sake of balance, it does not have to be if the patient prefers otherwise.

Breast Reduction + Breast Lift

Undergoing a breast reduction and breast lift together can help women achieve a more modest, natural-looking, and perkier breast contour than they desire. In fact, it’s somewhat rare for women who undergo a breast reduction not to also have their new breasts lifted in order to ensure that their breasts are properly positioned following surgery. During this combined procedure, excess tissue is removed from the breast, and then the remaining breast tissue is surgically lifted to a more natural position for the patient’s body.

Chin Surgery + Rhinoplasty

The balance of a person’s facial features can be delicate, meaning that when one feature is altered with surgery, the face may require additional assistance to maintain balance and symmetry. This is why it is fairly common for patients to combine rhinoplasty with chin surgery, in order to achieve a more balanced, rejuvenated appearance.

While the combined surgery approach may not be right for every patient, there is no denying the immense benefits that it can provide in many cases. breast reduction surgeryEven if it is not quite as commonly performed as breast augmentation, breast reduction surgery is still very in-demand among cosmetic surgery patients. This has become more and more true in recent years as societal trends have shifted more towards smaller, more natural-looking breasts. To help inform my prospective patients about this procedure and what it can (and cannot) help them achieve, I wanted to take a moment to debunk some common myths about breast reduction surgery.

True or False: Losing Weight Can Help Women Reduce Their Breast Size

This is false. While it’s true that there is fatty tissue in the breasts, there is also glandular tissue that will not respond to changes in a person’s weight. While losing weight may be able to provide a modest decrease in breast size, this is not a result that women should expect. This is why breast reduction (and not liposuction) is often needed to provide the aesthetic results that women who wish to decrease their breast size desire.

True or False: Breast Reduction Can Make Me Feel Better Physically

This is true. In addition to helping to increase a woman’s self-esteem by helping them achieve a more satisfying breast contour, breast reduction can provide some additional medical benefits as well. For example, overly large, heavy breasts can be a cause of back and neck pain, rashes under the breasts, bra strap indentations, as well as posture issues. Undergoing breast reduction can alleviate this pain and discomfort.

True or False: A Breast Reduction Will Not Be Covered By Insurance

This one depends on each patient’s unique situation as well as their individual insurance. As a general rule, insurance companies will not cover procedures that they deem elective, including cosmetic surgery. However, due to the medical benefits that we mentioned above, breast reduction may exist in a grey area between elective and not elective. It’s important to speak with your insurance provider first to know exactly what is and is not covered.
