Ask Dr. Franklyn Elliott: Goals of Male Plastic Surgery
With the continuously high rise in plastic surgery for men in recent years, I have found myself speaking with more male patients than ever before. A question that often comes up during these conversations is how plastic surgery for men is different from plastic surgery for women. On one hand, the two things are very similar, as in both cases the goal is to help the patient improve some aspect of their appearance and increase their self-confidence. But it’s true that male patients very oftenly come into their plastic surgery with different goals than their female counterparts. Today, I wanted to answer a few questions about plastic surgery for male patients and the goals they typically strive to attain.
Question #1: How Can Plastic Surgery Help Men Compliment a Fitness Regimen?
For many men, certain body contouring surgeries like liposuction and male breast reduction surgery can be outstanding ways to fully maximize the results of a healthy, fitness-conscious lifestyle. Looking your best and feeling your best often go hand in hand. For some, no matter how much work they put in, it can be impossible to shed stubborn fat from certain areas of the body. Common ones for men include the abdominals and waist, or love handles, as they are often referred to. Cosmetic surgery can help guys address these specific issues and reach the ideal body sculpting results they desire.
Question #2: Can Eyelid Surgery Help Men With Eyelid Asymmetry?
Yes. There are a number of things that can cause someone’s eyelids to look uneven or asymmetrical. Eyelid surgery can help by removing the small deposits of fat and/or loose skin that cause these issues. There sometimes is a concern that a man will look feminine after eyelid surgery. But as long as they choose a board-certified plastic surgeon with considerable experience performing male eyelid surgery, this should not be a concern. This is probably one of the reasons eyelid surgery for men is so consistently popular, as the results are subtle and discreet.
Question #3: If I Have Male Breast Enlargement (Often Referred To As “Man Boobs”), How Can I Know Which Procedure Is Right For Me?
This simply depends on diagnosing the root cause of your larger breasts. Some men simply have excess fat in their chest area that can be effectively treated with liposuction. However, it is far more common for this issue to result from gynecomastia, a condition caused by excess glandular tissue in the chest. In these cases, male breast reduction surgery is the only true solution. I always make sure to discuss all of the relevant options during the pre-surgery consultation to ensure there are no questions left unanswered.
It means a lot to me to see so many more men seeking out plastic surgery today than ever before. I take pride in being able to help all of my patients, regardless of gender, feel better about themselves and how they look.
