Ask Dr. Elliott: What to Know Before Neck Lift Surgery
As time goes by, every part of a person’s body will begin to experience visible signs of aging. However, certain areas are more susceptible to aging than others. The neck is one such area. Thanks to loose skin, excess fat, and wrinkles that accumulate over time, our neck’s can often make us look way older than we really are. That’s why I perform neck lift surgery for patients who wish to turn back the clock by rejuvenating the appearance of their neck and throat area. To help make it clearer what a neck lift can help patients accomplish, I have answered a few common questions about the procedure.
How is a Neck Lift performed?
Depending on the needs and goals of each patient, there are different options that I am able to pursue during a neck lift. These may include tightening skin around the neck, removing excess fat with liposuction, and/or tightening the platysma muscle in the neck.
How old do I have to be before undergoing a Neck Lift?
Neck lift surgery is for adult-aged patients only, however, there is no age restriction beyond that. The truth is that every person ages differently and some people may experience premature aging in their neck area at a relatively young age. As long as the patient is healthy enough to undergo the surgery, they can be a candidate for a neck lift.
How long will it be before I see the final results of my Neck Lift?
This can vary depending on the patient as well as the specific details of their procedure, however, it generally takes between several weeks and a couple months for the post-surgery swelling to fully disappear after a neck lift. In order to promote the best, longest-lasting neck lift results, I recommend following your plastic surgeon’s post-surgery instructions closely and to protect your incision area from direct sunlight in the weeks following surgery.
For many patients, it can be challenging to determine whether they would be better off undergoing a neck lift or facelift surgery. That’s why it’s so important to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon who has considerable experience treating the neck area to gain a full understanding of all your potential surgical options.
