Breast Reduction Surgery Explained
Back pain, unwanted attention, and permanent shoulder “dents” left by bra straps are just a few of the reasons that women with larger-than-average breasts seek breast reduction surgery. Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is performed by me, Dr. Franklyn Elliott, at my Atlanta and Alpharetta locations. Though not as prominent in popular culture as breast augmentation, breast reduction is still quite common: the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that over 62,000 breast reductions were performed in the United States in 2013.
What Is Breast Reduction?
Breast reduction surgery is the process of removing excess fat, skin, and tissue from the breasts. Though the exact technique used will vary depending on the size and nature of your breasts, in many cases an incision is made around the areola and down each breast.
Breast Reduction Candidates
Though it is becoming more common for men to seek breast reduction surgery, women with uncomfortably large and heavy or asymmetrical breasts still make up the majority of candidates. These women often report at least one of the following: persistent neck and/or back pain due to the weight of their breasts; unwelcome attention because of their large breasts; self-consciousness or poor self-esteem; and a frustrating inability to find suitable clothes that fit properly.
Breast Reduction Surgery
The actual procedure usually takes around three hours and most patients do not require an overnight hospital stay. When the surgery is complete, gauze and bandages will be wrapped securely around your breasts. You may experience some light bleeding, swelling, bruising, and tenderness following your breast procedure.
It’s very important to follow post-op instructions to ensure proper and timely healing. Expect to limit physical activity for two to four weeks following surgery. You may also be instructed to avoid underwire bras. Most breast-reduction patients experience some scarring, the noticeability of which often fades over time.
Getting Started
If you’re considering breast reduction surgery, schedule a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon who can evaluate your candidacy and advise you as to the surgery’s possible risks, benefits, and realistic expectations. Additionally, you will be provided with a detailed outline of the preparation and recovery process so that you know what to expect.
