Ask Dr. Elliott: Understanding Ear Surgery
When we think about the most prominent features on a person’s face, the ears are not necessarily one of the first things that many people think about. However, after decades as a board-certified plastic surgeon, I have seen firsthand how profound of an impact the ears can have on a person’s appearance. Undergoing ear surgery (also known as otoplasty) can help provide symmetry and balance to the face for people concerned about the size and shape of their ears. To help prospective patients better understand the procedure, I have taken some time to answer a few common questions about ear surgery.
Question #1: What makes someone a good candidate for ear surgery?
In order to be a good candidate to undergo ear surgery, a patient must be in good mental and physical health. Additionally, it’s important to maintain a positive outlook and realistic expectations regarding your procedure. Unlike many other cosmetic surgery procedures, ear surgery can be performed on minors. However, I feel it is important to wait at least until the teenage years to see how the face and ears develop before opting to undergo ear surgery.
Question #2: Will I have visible scarring after undergoing ear surgery?
While some degree of scarring is unavoidable during any surgery procedure, visible scarring after ear surgery is often extremely minimal. This is due to the natural folds of the ear as well as the very small incisions made during the procedure. If anything, some very minor scarring may occur in the back of the ear, but even these scars will fade with time.
Question #3: Can ear surgery be combined with other cosmetic procedures?
Yes. In fact, it’s quite common to pair ear surgery with other cosmetic procedures like rhinoplasty or chin surgery. Performing these procedures together can help the patient achieve a more balanced facial appearance while helping cut back on costs and additional recovery time that would come with having these surgeries done separately.
Even if it may not be as common as a facelift or eyelid surgery, the results achieved with ear surgery can be incredibly powerful. The satisfaction rate among my ear surgery patients is extraordinarily high. For more information or to schedule a plastic surgery consultation, contact me, Dr. Franklyn Elliott.
