What It Means for a Plastic Surgeon to be Board-Certified
Anyone who has ever had to choose a plastic surgeon to perform their cosmetic or reconstructive surgery procedure is probably very familiar with the term “board-certified.” Board-certification for a plastic surgeon guarantees a certain level of experience and expertise in performing plastic surgery and providing patient care. In order to reinforce the importance of working with a board-certified plastic surgeon for any cosmetic or reconstructive procedure, I wanted to drill down into what board-certification really means and entails for doctors.
For starters, it’s important to note that any plastic surgeon you consider should be board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). In order to receive board-certification from the ABPS, a surgeon must complete the following steps:
- Completion of medical school
- A minimum of five years of surgical training
- Accredited residency programs in both surgery and plastic surgery
- Experience performing at least 300 individual cosmetic surgery procedures for the face, breast, and body
- Ability to pass a comprehensive 2-day oral and written exam covering all aspects of plastic surgery
This combination of academic knowledge and professional experience is exactly what patients should prioritize when determining the right professional to perform their surgery. Additionally, board-certification in plastic and reconstructive surgery requires regular evaluation of a surgeon in several incredibly important areas including ethical standing and their commitment to safety for all their patients.
In the video below, I was happy to discuss board-certification in detail and why this should be so important to all plastic surgery patients:
Being board-certified in plastic and reconstructive surgery doesn’t automatically mean that a certain plastic surgeon will be the right choice for your specific needs and preferences. However, it’s an essential starting point for any patient in the early stages of their plastic surgery journey. I’m proud to offer a level of patient trust and satisfaction that has helped me be named a Top Doctor in Atlanta for over 20 years.
