How Breast Implants Continue to Become Safer Through the Years
As an experienced board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, I perform many procedures each year, maintaining trustworthy relationships with former and current patients. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) plastic surgery procedures have continued to grow over the past four years, with 15.1 million performed in 2013 alone. As plastic surgery has progressively become a more dependable and safe way to enhance appearance, correct abnormalities, and increase confidence among individuals, so has one of the most consistently popular procedures—breast augmentation with breast implants.
While breast augmentation can also be safely performed by way of tissue or fat transfer with promising results, many patients continue to choose breast implants for their more immediate result as well as their safety and pleasing aesthetic outcomes. Years of FDA trials and close monitoring of practices and procedures have made breast implants now safer than ever when inserted by a board-certified plastic surgeon. Many of my patients find breast implants ideal when opting for larger or more proportionately sized breasts, as well as some of my breast reconstruction patients who undergo breast procedures following mastectomy.
With techniques constantly evolving and improving, using breast implants during augmentation and reconstruction produces more consistently natural-looking results than we have seen in the past. Even those who have had breast implants inserted in the last ten to fifteen years can benefit from the latest techniques with revision procedures and replacements.
Some may be concerned that breast implants interfere with breast cancer detection. However, this is not the case if you choose a radiologist who is experienced with performing mammograms on those with breast implants. Additionally, there is no evidence that breast reconstruction procedures interfere with cancer detection or cancer reoccurrence. During an exam, be sure to be up front and completely transparent about your procedure(s) and breast implants to ensure an effective reading.
