Breast Surgery Complications: The Possible Risks & How to Avoid Them
Breast surgery can prove to be beneficial for many patients. Over my three-plus decades as a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, I’ve seen countless patients who wish for smaller breasts, larger breasts, or a different shape all together leave my office with their ideal appearance manifested. While it is important to have realistic expectations during breast surgery, I value working with each patient while considering their personal preferences to determine the best procedure.
Although serious complications resulting from breast surgery are uncommon and unlikely to occur when consulting a professional, as with any surgical procedure, there are no guarantees. Below, find a few common risks and suggestions on how to avoid their occurrence. Though not all encompassing, these risks are a glimpse into how you can be on the right track to a smooth procedure.
Risk #1: Choosing a less-than-proficient plastic surgeon. Recent news has reported women and men alike consulting unqualified, often black-market doctors to perform surgery at a discounted price. As a result, infections and serious complications have occurred.
Solution: Make no exceptions in your quest for a breast surgeon—an experienced, board-certified professional with good results is a must to minimize any obstacles.
Risk #2: The possibility of capsular contracture (varying from 3% to 9% in procedures), which causes implants to look and feel unnaturally hard as a result of built up the scar contracting and tightening.
Solution: Preventing capsular contracture comes down to consulting an experienced professional who utilizes FDA-approved implants, up-to-date surgical techniques (such as nipple guards), and following care instructions.
Risk #3: Improper healing causing infection, slow recovery times, and unnecessary discomfort.
Solution: Take the necessary steps to ensure you are in your best health before surgery. Eat a nutritious diet, exercise, and have full disclosure with me when it comes to any current health problems, smoking habits, and medications. This way, we can be sure to cover all that we need to within our consultation and subsequent meetings. Additionally, it is very important to schedule proper rest and adhere to my strict guidelines when it comes to post-surgery recovery.
Risk #4: Not following up with your surgeon.
Solution: Follow up by attending post-operative appointments. Often, many risks can be avoided by simply showing up. Follow-up visits allow for me to make sure that areas of operation are healing on schedule and infection-free, as well as discuss any questions or concerns you have in order to deliver the results you desire.
Although considering your goals and the associated risks is an essential component of breast surgery, I also factor in your medical history and physical state, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each technique to ensure you are on the right track to a safe and healthy procedure.
