Questions To Ask at Your Breast Augmentation Consultation

While the plastic surgery consultation is essential for allowing patients to learn more about their upcoming procedure, it’s also a perfect opportunity to better get to know the plastic surgeon who will be performing the surgery, while confirming that they are the right person for the job. Today, I have taken some time to help patients interested in breast augmentation surgery get the most out of their upcoming consultation appointments.

As with any other cosmetic surgery, every breast augmentation patient will have their own unique questions, concerns, and curiosities in the lead-up to their procedure. Still, I have often found that a simple list of more general questions can help prospective patients gain a better understanding of the most important things to bring up during the consultation process. With this in mind, here is a list of simple questions that I recommend asking during any breast augmentation consultation to help you on your journey:

  • Are you board-certified as a plastic surgeon?
  • How many years experience do you have performing breast augmentation surgery?
  • What breast implant material makes the most sense for my needs and why?
  • Can my breast augmentation be combined with a breast lift?
  • What kind of anesthesia will be used during the procedure?
  • How much visible scarring will I experience following my breast augmentation?
  • Will this surgery require a hospital stay? If so, at which facilities do you have hospital privileges?
  • Do you have any before and after breast augmentation photos from past patients you have performed surgery on?
  • Are there any risks or complications associated with this procedure?
  • What should I do to prepare in the days and weeks before my surgery?
  • What can I expect after surgery in terms of discomfort?
  • How much downtime for recovery will my breast augmentation realistically require?

How Old Do I Have to Be To Receive Breast Implants?

Cosmetic surgery procedures like breast augmentation were seen in the past as something almost exclusively for people in their 40s and up. Thankfully, that time is long gone. It’s been so encouraging over the last several years to be able to meet and help so many younger patients who are interested in improving their appearance with cosmetic rejuvenation. Still, not every procedure is necessarily an option for every person regardless of their age. Today I wanted to discuss the age requirements for someone who may be interested in undergoing a breast augmentation.

Some opinions may vary, but I personally believe that a woman should wait until she reaches her adult years before pursuing breast augmentation. Although it’s true that every woman develops differently, the breasts need time to fully grow and develop before it makes sense to consider undergoing a breast enhancement procedure. In my experience, a woman should wait at least until she reaches the age of 18. For younger women who want to use breast augmentation as a method for treating breast asymmetry, it can still be helpful to wait, as additional development after surgery can lead to more issues with asymmetry down the road.

The final decision is ultimately up to the patient, and their guardian in cases where the patient has not yet reached adult age. When Can I Resume My Normal Routine After Breast Augmentation?

The post-surgery recovery timetable is a major consideration for all cosmetic surgery patients. In addition to anxiously awaiting the final results of their cosmetic procedure, it’s also very important for patients to understand how their daily routine will be affected in the days and weeks after surgery. Oftentimes, normal activities like work, school, and exercise will need to be temporarily paused in order to allow the body the necessary time to properly heal following a cosmetic procedure. Today I wanted to speak more specifically about breast augmentation and when patients can resume their normal routine again after surgery.

Because breast augmentation surgery is so customizable depending on the specific needs and preferences of each patient, the time needed to recover after surgery can vary. Some women may begin low-impact daily activities like driving and walking in just a few days after their procedure depending on how they feel, while others may need more time. Patients will experience some degree of soreness, bruising, and swelling for 3-4 weeks after their surgery. More strenuous physical activity like working out after breast implants (including weight lifting, playing sports, jogging, or running) will require at least 6-8 full weeks of recovery. And possibly even more time for any heavy lifting.
