Ask Dr. Elliott: What is Breast Revision Surgery?
Breast revision surgery may not be as commonly known as breast enhancement and breast lift surgery, but that doesn’t make it any less beneficial to patients. Although the goal of every cosmetic procedure is to provide outstanding, long-lasting aesthetic results, changing circumstances over time can complicate this. I perform breast revision surgery to aid patients who are no longer satisfied with their breast augmentation results due to weight fluctuation, effects of natural aging, breast implant complications, or a change in their preferred breast size. To help prospective patients gain a more clear understanding of what breast revision can do, I have taken some time to answer a few common questions about the procedure.
Question #1: Does something need to be wrong with an implant for me to be eligible for breast revision?
No. Although some women who undergo breast revision surgery do so because of breast implant complications like implant rippling or capsular contracture, there are other reasons this choice is made. In some cases, a woman may simply prefer to change the size of her implants. In fact, FDA statistics indicate that approximately 37% of all breast revision procedures in the US are performed to help women who wish to switch to larger sized breast implants.
Question #2: Does breast revision surgery always require replacing a current breast implant?
No. Some women simply choose to have their breast implants removed in order to return to their original, natural breast size. The insertion of new breast implants isn’t mandatory during the procedure. It’s just another option that some patients prefer.
Question #3: Will there be additional visible scarring after a breast revision?
It’s possible. When I am able to, I try to use the same incision used during the patient’s previous breast augmentation to prevent any additional scarring. However, this isn’t always an option based on the needs and preferences that the patient may have for their revision surgery. Although it’s possible that there may be some new scarring, these scars can easily be concealed by a bra or bathing suit and will fade over time.
In my experience, patient satisfaction following breast augmentation surgery is extremely high. Still, breast revision can help keep options available for women who may have a change of heart somewhere down the line.
