Options for Hope: Breast Reconstruction Choices for Breast Cancer Patients
Just as every breast cancer diagnosis varies, treatment plans are specially crafted to take care of each patient’s unique case. According to the American Cancer Society’s statistics for breast cancer in the United States, about 232,670 women will be diagnosed with new cases of invasive breast cancer in 2014—a steadily increasing number. For many women, mastectomy, or breast cancer removal surgery, may prompt the consideration of breast reconstruction surgery. Because breast reconstruction can be one of the most important surgeries one undergoes, it’s crucial to choose a trustworthy, experienced surgeon that understands the importance of educating every patient about their breast reconstruction options
For over 27 years, board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Franklyn Elliott has performed breast reconstruction for thousands of women. Last year alone, members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) performed 95,589 breast reconstruction procedures—a 21% increase from the year 2000.
Breast reconstruction surgery may be performed immediately (at the same time of mastectomy) or sometime after cancer removal (commonly referred to as delayed) depending on the situation. Dr. Elliott offers a variety of breast reconstruction options including:
- Breast Implants: Available in customizable shapes and sizes, these can be inserted immediately following breast cancer removal or later on depending on the patient’s preference.
- Tissue Flap: The breast is reconstructed with the use of tissue from another part of the body such as the abdomen, back, thighs or buttocks. There are many flap procedures including TRAM flap, DIEP flap, latissimus dorsi flap, and the usage of tissue expanders.
- Acellular Dermal Matrices (ADM): ADM uses soft tissue replacements (either synthetic or animal based) to provide additional coverage and support for tissue expanders or implants used in breast reconstruction.
Dr. Elliott’s passion for breast reconstruction extends beyond educating his own patients. He frequents breast symposiums to teach other plastic surgeons the most advanced breast reconstruction techniques so they can educate their own patients.
