True Or False: Breast Lift Surgery
No one wants to get old; or more accurately, no one wants to look old. And drooping, sagging breasts are one of the most common aesthetic concerns that I hear about from my patients. In addition to hanging down lower than the ideal breast position that most women prefer, sagging breasts often lose their shape and firmness. Breast sagging can result from several factors including gravity, weight fluctuation, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and aging. Thankfully, breast lift surgery (also known as mastopexy) can provide tremendous relief for women who experience breast sagging. With so much information available online, it can be difficult to know what is true and what is false regarding your potential breast lift. That is why I am happy to provide some facts about breast lift surgery and the results it can help women achieve.
I Can Undergo a Breast Lift Even If I Plan to Become Pregnant in the Future
While this is true, I typically advise my patients to wait until they are finished having children before undergoing a body contouring procedure like a breast lift. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can negatively impact the results of your breast lift and create the need for additional procedures down the road to help you recapture the aesthetic results that you initially desired. Ultimately, the decision is yours, but I normally recommend waiting if you can.
My Breast Lift Results Will Last Forever
This is technically false. Breast lift surgery results are quite long-lasting, but that doesn’t necessarily mean forever. No plastic surgery, no matter how effective, will be able to stop the natural aging process entirely. Patients can however prolong their results by closely following their post-surgical instructions, avoiding considerable weight fluctuation, and living a healthy lifestyle in the years following their procedure.
There Will Be Considerable Visible Scarring After a Breast Lift
Thankfully, this is false. Scarring should not be significant following a breast lift procedure. During the surgery, I am often able to make my incisions in areas that will be easier to conceal any potential scarring. It’s important to remember that any scarring you experience will also fade and improve over time with the right post-surgery care.
I have always taken pride in being able to provide my patients with the knowledge and information they need to feel as confident and informed as possible heading into their cosmetic surgery procedure. To me, the more a patient understands about his or her potential surgery and what it can accomplish, the more realistic their expectations will be and the more satisfied they inevitably are after their surgery is complete.
