A Statistical Look at Plastic Surgery in the US

Part of my work as a double board-certified plastic surgeon is keeping tabs on the current trends and happenings within the world of plastic surgery. This is why I am always grateful when top plastic surgery boards like the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) release their annual statistical reports. As always, the recently-released report for 2018 features several notable facts and figures while presenting an impressive overview of the state of the industry. It was heartening to see the total number of cosmetic surgery procedures performed in the US last year reached 1,533,640 (up over 20% compared to 5 years ago).

A Statistical Look at Plastic Surgery in the USThe entire report is full of interesting tidbits and I recommend that everyone interested in this subject take the time to read it, but I have provided a quick overview of the findings that I found most interesting:

  • For the second consecutive year, breast augmentation (329,914 procedures) was the most commonly-performed in the United States.
  • The rest of the top-5 most popular procedures included liposuction, breast lift, tummy tucks, and eyelid surgery respectively.
  • Thigh lift surgery (up 24%), chin augmentation (up 20%), and breast reduction (up 18%) procedures all saw considerable increases in popularity relative to the previous year.
  • No procedure grew in popularity more over the past year than tummy tuck surgery, rising from 140,834 procedures performed in 2017 to 157,492 last year.
  • Despite its strong overall popularity, eyelid surgery saw the biggest decrease in the number of procedures performed from 2017 to 2018 (a 20.6% decrease).
  • The most popular cosmetic surgery procedures for male patients were liposuction, male breast reduction, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, and tummy tuck surgery.
  • Fat transfer injections remained very in-demand, accounting for over 89,000 total procedures.

Although the primary purpose of breast augmentation surgery is to increase the size and volume of the breasts, I have learned in my decades of performing this procedure, that no two breast augmentation patients are the same. Every woman comes into her consultation with different needs, preferences, histories, and more. Breast augmentation, like any other cosmetic surgery procedure, is a deeply personal choice. To be more precise, women interested in undergoing breast augmentation have a series of deeply personal choices to make. This includes what breast implant to use during their surgery.

When patients ask me, what is the “right” breast implant for their needs, the answer is whichever ones will help provide the natural-looking results that they desire. This means choosing between several sizes, shapes, and textures. While certain breast implants may have advantages over others, this depends entirely on the patient’s aesthetic preferences and the final results they hope to achieve from their surgery. While I am always happy to lend my expertise and help guide my patients towards a choice that I feel will be most beneficial and satisfying, it is ultimately up to them.

A successful consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon is a crucial and necessary first step towards achieving the aesthetic improvement that you desire from cosmetic surgery. During a consultation for liposuction, I discuss what this procedure is capable of to help patients establish realistic expectations for your surgery. We will discuss your surgery goals, medical history (including past surgeries, allergies, current medications, weight, diet habits), and more to confirm that liposuction is a safe and appropriate choice for your specific needs.

Questions to Ask During a Liposuction ConsultationIn order to get the most out of your liposuction consultation, it’s important to put in the time beforehand and come to your appointment prepared. Knowing what questions that you would like to ask in advance of your consultation can be an excellent way to ensure that you don’t leave any pressing curiosities or concerns on the table when your appointment has concluded. Although every patient is unique and no two consultations are the same, I would personally recommend asking the following questions during a liposuction consultation.

  • Are you board-certified as a plastic surgeon?
  • Do you have any other certifications or are you a member of any other plastic surgery societies or organizations?
  • How long have you been performing liposuction procedures?
  • What are the potential risks and complications of undergoing liposuction?
  • Will my liposuction be performed in your office or at a hospital?
  • Is the surgical venue accredited?
  • What areas can liposuction safely be applied to in my case?
  • How much downtime will I need for recovery after liposuction?
  • Do you have before-and-after liposuction photos from past procedures you have performed?
  • What can I expect from the final results of my liposuction?
  • How long will the results of my procedure last?
  • How much scarring should I expect after my surgery?
  • What kind of anesthesia will be used during my liposuction? And will anesthesia be supervised by an anesthesiologist?

When performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon, liposuction is a relatively simple procedure, but it’s still surgery. Therefore, it is important to take the necessary time to mentally and physically prepare for your procedure.
