Debunking Common Myths About Ear Surgery
While it may not be the household name in plastic surgery like facelift surgery is, ear surgery (or otoplasty) can serve a very important purpose for many prospective cosmetic surgery patients. Ear surgery is intended to help people who wish to change the appearance of their ears. When performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon, ear surgery can help those who feel their ears are too large, uneven, misshapen, or protruding. To help prospective patients learn more about this procedure, I have taken some time to debunk a few of the more common myths about ear surgery.
Myth #1: Ear Surgery Will Help Improve My Hearing
This is false. While the aesthetic results from ear surgery are consistently outstanding and long-lasting, this is exclusively a cosmetic procedure. Ear surgery can help alter the size or appearance of the ears, but it will not be able to help change a person’s hearing.
Myth #2: Ear Surgery is Only for Children
While ear surgery is one of the few plastic surgery procedures that is recommended for child-aged patients, adults can also be great ear surgery candidates. There is no such thing as too late for ear surgery. This procedure can help boost the self-esteem of adults who are unhappy with their ears.
Myth #3: There Will be Considerable Recovery Time After Ear Surgery
Some downtime will be needed for recovery, though it is not typically very much. In most cases, a patient is able to return to work, school, or their other normal daily routine in about two weeks after ear surgery. Ear surgery patients will need to have dressings in place to allow their incisions to heal and to support their ears’ new shape in the days immediately following their procedure.
The positive impact in a person’s self-esteem that can be achieved with ear surgery is amazing to witness.
