What Causes Droopy Eyelids & How Can They Be Treated?
One of the things that people may not understand about cosmetic surgery is that in many cases, these procedures are able to provide results that are far more than just cosmetic. While it’s true that many aesthetic imperfections do not pose any physical risks or limitations, some can drastically impact a person’s quality of life or even affect their physical safety and wellbeing. This is sometimes the case for people who experience droopy eyelids.
For some people, droopy eyelids are caused by a condition known as blepharochalasis. Blepharochalasis describes a drooping effect of the upper eyelid caused by stretched, excess skin. This is often caused by a natural loss of elasticity in the eyelid skin over time. The overwhelming majority of blepharochalasis cases are unilateral, meaning it only affects the upper eyelids, however, in some rare cases it can affect the lower lids.
This drooping can significantly reduce a person’s self-esteem by negatively impacting the appearance of the eyes and upper face. However, blepharochalasis of the upper eyelids can affect vision by obstructing the pupil. Some people with blepharochalasis may also experience swelling, scratching, or irritation in the eye area.
I am able to help people who experience eyelid drooping and blepharochalasis with eyelid surgery (also known as blepharoplasty). During the procedure, I am able to surgically remove excess skin from the eyelid that causes drooping and other potential symptoms. Depending on the patient’s needs, I may also remove excess fat from the eyelid area. The result is a refreshed, younger-looking appearance without any drooping or “tired looking” eyes. Check out this video where I discuss how I perform eyelid surgery in-office to help treat the appearance of the eyes:
The first step towards treating your droopy eyelids is meeting with a board-certified plastic surgeon (like myself) to discuss your options and determine if you are a good candidate for eyelid surgery. In my experience, this procedure is very easy on patients and the long-term satisfaction rate is extremely high.
