Can I Have Eyelid Revision Surgery After Blepharoplasty?
As a board-certified plastic surgeon, patient safety and satisfaction are always my top priorities. In the case of eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), patients are generally extremely happy with the anti-aging results that they achieve with the procedure in the overwhelming majority of cases. However, there can be exceptions. If the results of an initial eyelid procedure are not to your satisfaction, or you’ve experienced changes over time that have affected your results, there is such a thing as revision eyelid surgery, which can provide a further correction or adjustment to the eyelids.
Like any other cosmetic surgery procedure, revision eyelid surgery begins with a pre-surgery consultation appointment. During this consult, it’s important to communicate specifically why you are interested in this procedure. For example, is it simply because you’ve aged over the years or do you have issues you want to address from a previous surgery. If you have a specific concern, it is important to review with your surgeon your eyelid surgery results, and what you hope to accomplish through a revision procedure. In addition to a thorough discussion of your expectations and aesthetic goals, this appointment will also offer the opportunity for me to examine the eyelids and facial skin to determine if you are a good candidate for eyelid revision surgery.
Some reasons patients choose to undergo revision eyelid surgery include:
- Droopy or baggy eyelids that are not fully corrected by an initial eyelid surgery
- Sunken or hollowed-out upper eyelids that can result from too much skin being removed during eyelid surgery
- Asymmetry of the eyelids (size, shape, and/or position) caused by previous surgery
- Issues with blinking or fully closing the eye
- Eye dryness or excessive tearing up
In the video below, I discuss revision eyelid surgery and how it can be incredibly beneficial for patients who are not satisfied with the results of a previous blepharoplasty procedure:
While it’s important to remember that most people who undergo eyelid surgery remain very happy with their results in the years following their procedure, it’s also helpful to know that there are options available for people who have a different experience.
