Choosing an Incision Type for Breast Surgery
Many women choose to have a breast augmentation to increase their breast size and fullness. Board certified plastic surgeon; Dr. Franklyn Elliott has been performing plastic and reconstructive surgery for over 25 years and specializes in breast procedures. As with any cosmetic procedure, he has a comprehensive consult with each of his patients to discuss all their options for breast enhancement and what will provide the best results for their individual needs.
During a breast enhancement consultation Dr. Elliott will discuss the various factors involved with the breast procedure including the types of breast implants, placement of implants, size, shape and incision placement. Knowing the various incision options is essential for our patients’ understanding and is partially determined by both your preference and the type of breast implant desired.
Dr. Elliott performs breast augmentation surgery through an incision underneath the breast or around the areola. The most common breast incision is made underneath the breast, known as the inframammary incision. Dr. Elliott will then insert an implant through the natural crease beneath the breast. Both silicone and saline implants can be placed through the crease, and scarring is minimal since it’s hidden underneath the breast.
During the areola method, Dr. Elliott will make a small incision around the edge of the areola. Some patients, who are uncomfortable with the appearance of their nipples, may also choose to have nipple reconstruction. This method is recommended for women who would like to combine breast augmentation and breast lift procedures as both use this type of incision.
