What Guys Should Know Before Considering Cosmetic Surgery
For many men who want to improve their appearance, the thought of undergoing cosmetic surgery may never even cross their minds. In the past, cosmetic procedures may have seemed too feminine for many guys, but that era has clearly come and gone. As evidenced from last year’s statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), male plastic surgery is not only far more common than it was a decade ago, but the number of procedures performed on guys continues to increase every year.
However, I have noticed that certain male patients are less willing to discuss their procedures with their male friends. Meaning that fewer men have the advantage of hearing firsthand how cosmetic surgery can positively impact their lives. To help fill in these knowledge gaps and encourage more male patients not to be hesitant about pursuing plastic surgery, I have provided a few simple facts for guys to consider.
- Most cosmetic surgeries are not gender specific. While there are exceptions like cosmetic breast procedures for women, the majority of cosmetic procedures can be performed on both men and women.
- Your gender does dictate your results. Although both a man and a woman may want the same procedure, the results they desire from their respective procedures can differ significantly. For instance, when I perform a body contouring procedure like male breast reduction on a male patient, I work to highlight and retain the more masculine features.
- Cosmetic surgery is not a substitute for weight management. It’s true that certain cosmetic procedures like liposuction can help guys remove unwanted excess fat from their bodies. However, in order to maintain the results achieved from their surgery, it’s up to the patient to continue to make healthy life choices like working out and eating a healthy diet.
- Nonsurgical options are available too. For any number of reasons, a guy that wants to correct a certain aesthetic issue may not be able to undergo surgery. I offer a number of nonsurgical options that can still provide most men outstanding aesthetic results, without the recovery time needed after surgery. This can include cosmetic facial injections to help reduce wrinkles or adding volume to areas of the face that may be lacking due to aging.
Like anyone else, a man’s cosmetic surgery journey begins by finding a skilled, board-certified plastic surgeon that they feel comfortable with. Ideally, someone with considerable experience performing your respective procedure, who can help you develop a surgery plan that best helps you achieve your aesthetic objectives.
