The Selfie Effect: Plastic Surgery is Rising With Millennials
Aging affects every person differently. Some people reach their 60s with only modest signs of aging. Others experience common age signs like facial lines and wrinkles far earlier. Over the last few years, I have noticed a significant trend of millennial-aged patients pursuing plastic surgery to help address common age signs and other aesthetic imperfections. In fact, according to The Aesthetic Society, people under 34 underwent more cosmetic surgery procedures last year than patients between the ages of 51-64.
But what accounts for this recent influx of demand among younger patients? Young people have an increased interest in self care. This includes taking account of the connection between a person’s happiness with their appearance and their overall self-esteem and wellness. The prevalence of social media and how much people are willing to share of themselves online unquestionably contributes to this as well. And that’s before factoring in the emergence of Zoom and video conferencing in the wake of COVID-19.
In the video below, I take time to discuss some of the more common plastic surgery procedures that I perform on younger patients:
As long as the patient is a healthy adult and is truly a good candidate for the procedure they are pursuing, there is no age restriction on plastic surgery. The only exception is that certain implants have age limitations, usually requiring patients to be 18 or 22 years of age. It’s been great to see so many more people realizing the impact that cosmetic surgery can have on their appearance and self-confidence and I hope this trend continues.
