Answers to Frequently Asked Questions about Breast Augmentation
For two decades, board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Franklyn Elliott has performed breast augmentation for patients who desire to change the appearance of their breasts. Below, Dr. Elliott answers some of the top questions often asked by patients who are interested in the benefits of the most popular cosmetic breast procedures.
“How old do I need to be before I can have a breast enhancement procedure?”
It is the general consensus among surgeons that patients should not undergo breast augmentation before full breast maturation. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the FDA has specific rules on the ages when breast implants are approved for use. Saline breast implants can be used for breast augmentation and breast reconstruction for women 18 years or older, while silicone implants are approved for usage only in women aged 22 and older. Because it breast augmentation is a surgical procedure, various physical and emotional effects should be considered. If the patient is emotionally and physically mature with realistic expectations for the outcome of procedure, they are generally sound candidates for breast augmentation.
“Which breast implant option should I choose?”
The answer truly depends on the patient’s preference. There are three, FDA-approved breast implant types available on the market today: silicone, saline, and cohesive silicone gel-filled, also known as “gummy bear implants.” Additionally, several shapes, textures, and sizes are available to be customized to your unique body type and needs. During a consultation, breast implant options and surgical techniques are discussed with every patient to help them achieve realistic expectations with their desired results.
“What complications accompany breast implants?”
Just as with any surgery, there are inherent risks when placing foreign objects into the body. In the case of breast augmentation, saline implants are made up of a silicone elastomer shell filled with sterile saline solution, and silicone implants are made completely out of silicone gel. Scar tissue can become tough and form tightly around saline or silicone breast implants over time in a condition known as capsular contracture. Breast implants themselves do not become hard. Avoid capsular contracture by choosing an experienced surgeon and following proper post procedure care guidelines, such as wearing supportive undergarments and massaging the area.
