Ask Dr. Franklyn Elliott: Mommy Makeover Benefits
Undergoing mommy makeover surgery can be an excellent way for women to get closer to their ideal body size or turn back the clock and regain the silhouette that they desire. For anyone unaware, a mommy makeover combines different body contouring surgeries like liposuction, tummy tuck surgery, and cosmetic breast surgery to provide outstanding and long-lasting aesthetic results. I have spoken with many patients over the years who are intrigued by the idea of a mommy makeover, but don’t fully understand the procedure or what it is capable of. With this in mind, I have taken some time to answer a few common questions about mommy makeover surgery and its benefits for patients.
Question #1: Can I Undergo Breast Reduction as Part of a Mommy Makeover?
Absolutely. The point of the mommy makeover is to provide comprehensive body contouring results that fit the specific goals of each patient. While breast augmentation is more common, I have been performing breast reduction procedures as a component of a mommy makeover for many years, and this approach can be extremely beneficial for women who want to reduce the size and volume of their natural breast contour.
Question #2: Will Being Diagnosed With Graves’ Disease Prevent Me From Undergoing a Mommy Makeover?
Not necessarily, but this all depends on each individual patient’s unique situation. Graves’ disease, an autoimmune disorder that can affect the thyroid gland, may require immunosuppressant medication that can affect the body’s ability to undergo and safely recover from surgery. However, this isn’t always the case and I have performed mommy makeover surgery in similar circumstances. This is also something I would discuss with your endocrinologist if needed.
Question #3: How Much Weight Can I Expect to Lose Following My Mommy Makeover?
Not much. There is a very common misconception that a mommy makeover is a weight loss procedure, but that is not the case. Although it’s true that some fat will likely be removed as part of the procedure, a mommy makeover is a body contouring surgery (not a weight loss surgery) and the total amount of weight lost will not be substantial. Patients should reach their goal weight before considering a mommy makeover and keep any weight loss expectations realistic.
Helping patients better understand procedures like the mommy makeover and the benefits that they can provide is a big reason why I’ve been named a Top Doctor in Atlanta for over 20 years.
