Consider Experience & Expertise When Choosing a Plastic Surgeon

As I have discussed many times in these blog posts, patients interested in cosmetic surgery will have several important decisions to make before any procedure can take place. And none of these decisions is as critical as selecting the right plastic surgeon. Although there is no shortage of excellent, qualified plastic surgeons in the area, there are certain definitive signs of quality and expertise that prospective patients should keep in mind when making their selection. Today, I thought it would be instructive to discuss the importance of finding the right plastic surgeon for each patient’s specific needs.

Safety is obviously of the utmost importance during any surgical procedure, and finding an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon is incredibly important to this. However, working with the right plastic surgeon is also critical when it comes to achieving the long-term aesthetic results that you desire. While it’s essential to find a board-certified plastic surgeon to perform any cosmetic procedure, there are other factors to keep in mind. Specifically, considerable experience performing your respective surgery and a shared aesthetic sensibility to make sure that you can achieve what you are truly hoping to. It’s important to see a surgeon’s before and after plastic surgery results before making a decision.

How Old Do I Have to Be To Receive Breast Implants?

Cosmetic surgery procedures like breast augmentation were seen in the past as something almost exclusively for people in their 40s and up. Thankfully, that time is long gone. It’s been so encouraging over the last several years to be able to meet and help so many younger patients who are interested in improving their appearance with cosmetic rejuvenation. Still, not every procedure is necessarily an option for every person regardless of their age. Today I wanted to discuss the age requirements for someone who may be interested in undergoing a breast augmentation.

Some opinions may vary, but I personally believe that a woman should wait until she reaches her adult years before pursuing breast augmentation. Although it’s true that every woman develops differently, the breasts need time to fully grow and develop before it makes sense to consider undergoing a breast enhancement procedure. In my experience, a woman should wait at least until she reaches the age of 18. For younger women who want to use breast augmentation as a method for treating breast asymmetry, it can still be helpful to wait, as additional development after surgery can lead to more issues with asymmetry down the road.

The final decision is ultimately up to the patient, and their guardian in cases where the patient has not yet reached adult age. Ear-Surgery-Otoplasty-Atlanta-Alpheratta-GAWhen we think about the most prominent features on a person’s face, the ears are not necessarily one of the first things that many people think about. However, after decades as a board-certified plastic surgeon, I have seen firsthand how profound of an impact the ears can have on a person’s appearance. Undergoing ear surgery (also known as otoplasty) can help provide symmetry and balance to the face for people concerned about the size and shape of their ears. To help prospective patients better understand the procedure, I have taken some time to answer a few common questions about ear surgery.

Question #1: What makes someone a good candidate for ear surgery?

In order to be a good candidate to undergo ear surgery, a patient must be in good mental and physical health. Additionally, it’s important to maintain a positive outlook and realistic expectations regarding your procedure. Unlike many other cosmetic surgery procedures, ear surgery can be performed on minors. However, I feel it is important to wait at least until the teenage years to see how the face and ears develop before opting to undergo ear surgery.

Question #2: Will I have visible scarring after undergoing ear surgery?

While some degree of scarring is unavoidable during any surgery procedure, visible scarring after ear surgery is often extremely minimal. This is due to the natural folds of the ear as well as the very small incisions made during the procedure. If anything, some very minor scarring may occur in the back of the ear, but even these scars will fade with time.

Question #3: Can ear surgery be combined with other cosmetic procedures?

Yes. In fact, it’s quite common to pair ear surgery with other cosmetic procedures like rhinoplasty or chin surgery. Performing these procedures together can help the patient achieve a more balanced facial appearance while helping cut back on costs and additional recovery time that would come with having these surgeries done separately.

Even if it may not be as common as a facelift or eyelid surgery, the results achieved with ear surgery can be incredibly powerful.
