Debunking Common Myths About Facelift Surgery
For many years, facelift surgery was almost synonymous with cosmetic surgery itself. Due to outdated ideas about cosmetic surgery and certain pop cultural touchstones like celebrity tabloids, there are many misunderstandings and mistruths about facelift surgery that have been around for years. However, when performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon like myself, facelift surgery is a tried and true method for facial rejuvenation. Below I have taken some time to debunk common facelift myths to help prospective patients better understand one of the most dependable cosmetic procedures on the market.
Myth #1: Facelift surgery is no longer as common as it used to be.
Despite the emergence of so many other terrific cosmetic procedures for the face including eyelid surgery, brow lift, non-surgical treatments, and more, facelift surgery is more popular than ever. In fact, according to the most recent statistics collected by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), facelift surgery was the third most commonly performed cosmetic procedure in the US with over 230,000 procedures performed in the last year.
Myth #2: Undergoing a facelift will completely change the contours of the face.
In recent years, there has been a trend towards patients preferring more subtle, natural-looking aesthetic results. This is even more important when it comes to facial procedures like facelift surgery. My goal during a facelift is not to reinvent the face, but rather to make minor adjustments to help accentuate the patient’s favorite facial features and alleviate signs of facial aging like wrinkles, lines, and more.
Myth #3: I can achieve the same results with non-surgical cosmetic treatments.
While non-surgical treatments for the face like cosmetic facial injections can often provide outstanding aesthetic results for many patients, these treatments are not intended to replicate the results that a facelift can provide. It’s less a matter of effectiveness and more about what these respective treatments are intended to provide. I always make sure to discuss all of my patients’ available treatment options during pre-surgery consultations in my office so they better understand what each one can do for them.
Here in my office, I perform a variety of facelift surgery techniques including my signature short scar facelift. I have often found that the more options that patients have, the happier they will ultimately be with the surgical path they select.
