The Many Benefits of Tummy Tuck Surgery
When I initially meet with a new patient who is interested in undergoing a cosmetic surgery procedure, they often have a specific aesthetic goal in mind that they want to achieve. However, some procedures including tummy tuck surgery are able to provide additional benefits that the patient is not even aware of. It’s always great to be able to present patients with results that are even more comprehensive and beneficial than they even imagined. With this in mind, I wanted to discuss the various and wide-ranging benefits of tummy tuck surgery.
Removal of Excess Skin
This is often the primary reason that patients inquire about tummy tuck surgery. Over time, it’s only natural for both men and women to experience some degree of skin laxity in their abdominal area. This stretched, loose skin can create an appearance similar to excess fat, but cannot be shed with diet and exercise. During a tummy tuck, I am able to remove this loose skin and tighten up the remaining tissue to create a more trim, healthy looking body contour.
Repairing Muscle Damage
Another issue that I commonly address with tummy tuck surgery is separated or damaged abdominal muscles. This is especially common for women who have been pregnant in the past. This muscle damage can affect posture and create the appearance of a belly “pooch”. For patients who require it, I am able to tighten and repair the abdominal muscles during surgery.
Additional Medical Benefits
While considered a cosmetic procedure, a tummy tuck can provide additional medical benefits to patients as well. By repairing separated muscles in the abdomen, a tummy tuck can help repair and prevent potential ventral hernias. The posture correction that a tummy tuck provides may also be able to assist patients who experience persistent back pain and soreness. I have also seen some cases where undergoing a tummy tuck has been able to assist patients who experience stress urinary incontinence.
In addition to being a tried and true aesthetic option, the tummy tuck is a lot more versatile than it often gets credit for.
