True or False: Ear Surgery
Being a board-certified plastic surgeon means far more than just performing plastic surgery and helping my patients feel better about their appearance. I know that patients, and often their loved ones too, look to me to provide knowledge, confidence, and reassurance about every aspect of their procedure. This is why I like to use these blog posts to provide helpful and informative details about what the cosmetic surgery procedures that I perform can and cannot do. With this in mind, I was happy to take some time to explore a few true and false statements pertaining to ear surgery.
Ear Surgery Can Be Performed on Minors
This is true. Ear surgery is one of the few cosmetic surgery procedures that I routinely perform on younger patients. While it is typically my belief that patients should wait at least until their teenage years in order to give their face and ears the time they need to fully develop before making any decisions, there are exceptions and this is something that I will discuss during an ear surgery consultation in my office with the patient and their guardian.
Ear Surgery Must Be Performed on Both Ears in All Cases
This is not necessarily true. The goal of most ear surgery procedures is to help the patient achieve a more proportional appearance, in accordance with their other facial features. However, some patients may have one ear that bothers them more than the other. Still, in my personal experience, only addressing one ear can occasionally lead to additional asymmetry concerns and performing on both ears is the better path to long-term satisfaction with ear surgery results.
Ear Surgery Results Are Incredibly Long-Lasting
While I never like to use words like “permanent”, the truth is that the results achieved with ear surgery are intended to be very long-lasting. Unlike other areas of the face, the ears are less susceptible to natural aging and there’s no reason that an ear surgery patient should need any additional maintenance or follow-up care once the final results of their procedure have been achieved.
When performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon, ear surgery can provide an incredible boost to a patient’s appearance and self-confidence. Providing the top level of care and attention to my patients when performing procedures like ear surgery is a big part of why I have been named a Top Doctor in Atlanta for over 20 years.
