True or False: Facelift Surgery
Every patient comes into their plastic surgery consultation appointment with their own ideas about what a specific cosmetic surgery procedure can help them achieve. In the case of facelift surgery, which has been around since the start of plastic surgery as we know it, many people can have outsized or misplaced expectations for what the procedure is capable of, or what benefits they can reasonably expect. That’s why I thought it would be helpful today to separate fact from fiction by discussing a few true and false statements about facelift surgery.
It is true that younger patients (including millennials) can undergo facelift surgery. While the procedure is typically associated with patients in their 40’s or older, I have had great success over the years performing facelift surgery on younger patients. Every person ages differently, and there is no specific predetermined age minimum to undergo a facelift. As long as I am able to determine that the patient is a good candidate for the procedure based on their aesthetic issues, and that the procedure can be performed safely, younger patients can benefit greatly from a facelift if they are a good candidate.
It is false that facelift surgery is a one-size-fits-all procedure. In fact, there are many different ways that a facelift can be performed. For instance, I perform my signature short scar facelift, which I have specifically defined to help patients address the lower portion of the face, including the jowls and jawline. This procedure method can also provide a natural lifting effect to the neck area by removing loose skin as well as repositioning muscle and tissue if needed. It’s important to ask about the different facelift methods that are available during the pre-surgery consultation.
It is true that certain types of facelift can be performed as an in-office procedure for some patients. That means that instead of going to a hospital to have a facial procedure, it can be performed in the comfort of my office instead for the right candidate. This can make the surgical process more simple and comfortable, while cutting down on hospital fees that often accompany cosmetic procedures.
It’s important for patients to understand what is true and false regarding their surgeries, as this is essential for setting realistic expectations for their procedures.
