Getting to Know The Z-Plasty Neck Lift & Its Benefits
As you may be aware through personal experience, the neck is one of the areas of the body most susceptible to premature aging and other aesthetic imperfections that arise over time. This is a big reason why the neck is such a common concern for the patients that I speak to in my office. However, different procedures are capable of helping to address different aesthetic issues and it’s important for patients to understand all of their options. Today, I wanted to go into detail about one specific neck rejuvenation procedure that I perform, the Z-plasty, and the unique benefits that it can provide my patients.
I perform Z-plasty surgery for mostly men due to the way their neck area ages. I choose this as an alternative to traditional neck lift surgery. As men age, it’s natural to experience loose skin, excess fat, and weakened muscles in the neck area that can create the appearance of a double chin or “turkey neck.” Additionally, for men, it can be more challenging to hide scarring around the ear area. When performing a Z-plasty, I focus more on the jowls and how I can effectively hide any post-surgical scarring to ensure an outstanding, but subtle and discreet final result.
My Z-plasty neck lift begins by making a small incision underneath the chin, easily hidden from view. I am then able to elevate and remove excess submental fat that may cause the appearance of a double chin. Once this has been done, I will tighten the platysma muscles and remove any excess skin to create a smoother and younger-looking neck contour.
The procedure can be (and usually is) done under local anesthesia – in the office, in about one hour. Post-surgery recovery following a Z-plasty is typically very straightforward and significant results can often be seen within two months of the procedure being done.
While I primarily perform Z-plasty procedures on male plastic surgery patients, it can be performed on women in certain instances. In order to be considered a good candidate for Z-plasty surgery, patients should:
- Be healthy enough for surgery and post-surgery recovery
- Maintain realistic expectations for their procedure
- Not smoke or quit smoking in the weeks preceding and following surgery
