Keeping Realistic Expectations During Breast Augmentation
Every plastic surgeon wants the very best from every cosmetic and reconstructive procedure that they perform. I know I do. And the same is obviously true for every patient that I work with. However, it’s important for people to realize that plastic surgery, while it is able to provide tremendous, often life-changing results, is not magic. There is no way to guarantee that the final results of a procedure will be 100% exactly what each patient had in mind. That’s why I make it a point during consultations to instill the importance of achieving and maintaining realistic expectations.
During a breast augmentation consultation appointment, I make sure every patient understands certain things about what their surgery can and cannot help them achieve. For instance, it’s important for women to understand that due to variances among bra manufacturers, it’s not possible to guarantee an exact, specific new cup size. Additionally, breast augmentation results are intended to be long-lasting, but every person ages differently and your breasts may change over time due to aging or other changes that your body encounters.
In the following video, I discuss breast augmentation consultations and how realistic expectations can lead to long-term satisfaction after surgery:
I strongly recommend preparing a list of questions or thoughts before our breast augmentation consultation to make sure you leave no stone unturned when it comes to mentally preparing for your surgery. With all this said, it’s also important to reiterate that the overwhelming majority of women who undergo breast augmentation procedures are incredibly satisfied with their results. I just prefer for my patients to have a greater understanding of their surgery and what it is capable of before the procedure takes place in the spirit of transparency.
