Debunking Common Myths About Eyelid Surgery

When planning to undergo cosmetic surgery, there is no such thing as too much information. In recent years, I have been so impressed by the ability and willingness of my patients to seek out important information about their prospective procedures via the Internet. However, it’s important to differentiate truthful, dependable sources of information from less reputable sources. So to help clear things up, I wanted to discuss a few common misconceptions about eyelid surgery and explain what is true and what is false.

Debunking Common Myths About Eyelid SurgeryEyelid Surgery is Only Intended for Older Patients

This is false. While eyelid drooping and other aesthetic concerns that eyelid surgery can address may occur more commonly with age, that doesn’t mean the procedure cannot help younger patients. For some people, baggy or droopy eyelids can run in the family, leading to a desire to have this concern treated at a younger age.

Recovery is Fairly Simple After Eyelid Surgery

This is true. Every patient recovers differently, however bruising and swelling after eyelid surgery will typically be gone about a week following the procedure. Most people are able to return to work and other normal daily activities between a week and ten days after surgery. Most exercise regimens can be continued two to three weeks after eyelid surgery, but we will discuss this timetable in more detail during the pre-surgery consultation.

Eyelid Surgery Will Dramatically Alter My Facial Appearance

This is false. When performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon, the results of eyelid surgery are intended to be subtle and natural-looking. Instead of considering eyelid surgery as a way to fundamentally alter your facial structure, think of it as a way to achieve a refreshed, younger-looking face.

Eyelid Surgery Will Make Me Look More Feminine

This is false. Although this is a common concern among male patients, I have special techniques to ensure that male patients retain their more masculine features after undergoing eyelid surgery.

I have been performing eyelid surgery for decades and am always amazed at the outstanding, yet subtle results that this procedure is able to provide my patients. Eyelid surgery is a very safe safe procedure, but a pre-surgery consultation appointment is still required to confirm that you are a good candidate.
