Ask Dr. Elliott: Can I Exercise with Implants?

Board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Franklyn Elliott has used breast implants in various procedures for over 25 years. Other than breast augmentation, breast procedures that use breast implants can include breast lift, breast revision, and breast reconstruction surgery.

After surgery, Dr. Elliott is often asked about how breast implants will affect daily exercise routines. The answer: so long as you follow the pre- and post-operative instructions given to you, most women will be able to exercise normally. Cardio exercises and weight training should be perfectly acceptable in due time; however, taking the essential time to heal is crucial for a healthy recovery that produces the results desired.

When you allow yourself a healthy recovery, the intricacies of the body will restore in the breast and skin. Before beginning an exercise regimen, consult Dr. Elliott on whether or not you are far enough along in the healing process to ensure the best plastic surgery results. As with any procedure, individual healing times can vary. Dr. Elliott will help you decide if a particular exercise regimen is okay to resume based on individual factors, including the type of procedure performed, age, and type of exercise routine to ensure proper healing.  When you are able to begin exercising, it is essential to consider adequate support for implants by wearing accommodating sports bras while exercising.
