Debunking Common Myths About Breast Revision Surgery
The goal for every cosmetic surgery that I perform is to deliver the final results that each patient hoped to achieve from their procedure. And in my experience, the overwhelming majority of breast augmentation patients are completely satisfied following their surgery. However, there can be exceptions. As the years go on, changes that occur due to weight fluctuation or natural aging, breast implant complications, a change in preferred breast size, or other factors can lead women to seek out breast revision surgery. Breast revision is intended to help women who seek to alter the look and/or feel of their breasts after a previous breast augmentation procedure. To help establish how breast revision can help and which women may be good candidates for it, I have taken some time to debunk a few of the more common myths about the procedure.
Myth #1: Breast Implants Are Meant to Last Forever
After a breast augmentation, your results are definitely meant to be long-lasting. However, long-lasting does not mean forever. It’s normal for breast implants to last up to a decade (or longer), but the chances of experiencing a breast implant rupture, capsular contracture, or another breast implant complication increase with every passing year. In these cases, breast revision can be a solution for your issues.
Myth #2: Breast Revision Is Only for Patients Who Experience Complications
Some women pursue breast revision surgery due to personal preferences that have nothing to do with health concerns or complications that they may have experienced. It’s normal for some women to change their mind about their desired implant size, or if they still want breast implants at all. No matter a patient’s reason for considering breast revision, the procedure can bring enormous relief for anyone who wants to change their breast implants.
Myth #3: You Can Undergo Breast Revision Soon After Your Initial Breast Augmentation
This is false. I normally instruct that prospective breast revision patients wait at least one full year after their breast augmentation before really considering undergoing a revision procedure. In addition to your body needing time to fully recover before undergoing an additional surgical procedure, it’s important to allow for the final results of your breast augmentation to settle before knowing for certain that you are not truly satisfied.
If for whatever reason you’re not happy with the state of your breasts and would like a change following a previous breast augmentation, you may be a great candidate for breast revision surgery.
