How to Reduce Scarring After Liposuction

Patients that I speak with during cosmetic surgery consultations are always curious to know how they will look after their procedure is complete. And concerns about visible post-surgery scarring is a topic that comes up very frequently. Scarring is a natural and unavoidable part of any plastic surgery procedure. However, certain procedures like liposuction carry less risk of visible scarring than other cosmetic surgeries.

The scar size after a plastic surgery procedure is determined by the size of the incision made during the surgery. Since I perform liposuction with a very small micro-cannula, the incisions and resulting scars are typically very small. However, small does not mean nonexistent and you should expect some minor scarring after liposuction. Post-surgical scarring is still an issue that should be considered before making any final decisions about undergoing liposuction or any other cosmetic procedure.

Although scarring after liposuction is typically very minimal, there are still things you can do to reduce the visibility of your scars. It’s obviously very important to closely follow your board-certified plastic surgeon’s pre and post-surgical instructions. During your recovery, keep your incision area clean and well-dressed with bandages if required. Do not pick or scratch any scabs. Wear sunscreen when you are outside if your incision area is healed and make sure to keep it covered if not. Certain doctor-approved creams or lotions can be of assistance as well.

In the video below, I discuss scarring after liposuction and what patients can do to reduce the amount of visible scarring they experience:

In my experience, liposuction patients are generally delighted by the final results of their procedure despite any visible scarring that may occur. Remember that if you care for them properly, plastic surgery scars will fade and become less visible over time. During your cosmetic surgery consultation, we will discuss potential scarring and other factors to help you make the most informed decision possible about your surgery.
